The reasons why we recommend waiting until at least 12 months of age before spaying or neutering, are listed below.
Sex hormones play an important role in a puppy’s growth and development. Altering before physical maturity has been associated with an increased risk of certain problems in some dogs, depending on breed, sex, and individual factors, including:
• Delayed growth-plate closure and changes in bone development
• Changes in joint development and body proportions
• Increased risk of some orthopedic problems, including certain joint injuries
• Increased risk of obesity/weight gain after altering
• Urinary incontinence, particularly in some females
• Changes in coat or body composition
• Possible changes in the risk of certain cancers, depending on breed and sex
Our goal in recommending 12 months or older is simply to give our Brittany puppies additional time to grow and mature before being altered. 🐾❤️
We understand that medical circumstances can arise in which your veterinarian determines that altering before 12 months is necessary.
In those situations, unless you provide us with written documentation from your veterinarian confirming that an early spay or neuter is medically necessary, spaying or neutering your puppy before 12 months of age will immediately terminate and void our Health Guarantee.
This requirement is intended to protect the health and proper growth and development of our Brittany puppies and is a condition of maintaining coverage under our Health Guarantee.
We take the health of our puppies seriously and offer a health guarantee of 1 year for every puppy we sell. Each puppy undergoes a comprehensive physical examination by our veterinarian at 7 weeks of age, which includes exams of their eyes, ears, mouth for cleft palate, heart for murmurs, hip and knee rotations, as well as for umbilical and inguinal hernias.
Should any unexpected issues arise, we will inform you immediately, we pride ourselves in being transparent. We're confident in the quality of our puppies and stand behind them 100%,
--Do any of the parents have any health issues?
Our breeding stock is free from hereditary or congenital health conditions. Brittanys, akin to humans, require a balanced diet and regular exercise, coupled with proper care, to maintain their health. Without appropriate care, they may develop health issues, including those common in humans during their senior years.
--Health Testing--OFA Testing
We’ll begin genetic testing on all our kennel line starting July 2026, and OFA testing will be completed on new dams and sires at two years of age.
At SRK, we believe health testing is one of the most important investments we can make in our breeding program. OFA certifications and genetic testing will help us to make responsible breeding decisions and give families confidence that we’re doing everything possible to produce healthy, happy Brittanys for generations to come. While we understand this may not matter to everyone, as responsible breeders, it matters deeply to us.
-- Do we personally hunt our Brittanys?
We offer a lineage of high-quality hunting stock. Both my husband and I work full-time so we are not able to hunt with our Brittanys. However, many of our owners do hunt, and you can find their pictures here as well as on our Facebook or Instagram pages.
